The jam scene was abuzz this weekend, as a slew of bands descended upon Northern Florida for Suwannee Rising at the Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park.

Umphrey’s McGee offered two headlining on Saturday, April 10, serving up lots of jams and even a cameos by percussionists Adam Deitch of Lettuce and Ben Atkind of Goose. (UM drummer Kris Myers was not present for this performance. As the band wrote that day, “The bad news is Kris Myers is not going to be here with us tonight. The good news is Umphrey’s McGee has two drummers in the band. So, were going to be in for a special night, we have some friends going to help us out.”)

Umphrey’s opened with a rocking version of It’s Not Us cut “The Silent Type,” before sinking into a nice, three-part “Hajimemashite”> “Atmosfarag”> “Shine On You Crazy Diamond” jam.

The rest of the first set also saw guitarist Jake Cinninger behind the drumkit. He punctuated tunes like “The Triple Wide,” “Sociable Jimmy” and “Making Flippy Floppy” with his percussion skills. The final tune also included the aforementioned sit-in by Goose drummer Ben Atkind.

Set two opened with the live favorite “Glory” and, later, the final sit-in gave the outdoor crowd a lot to cheer about: Adam Deitch joined in on the set-ending one-two punch of Mötley Crüe’s “Dr. Feelgood” and UM’s “Push The Pig,” which includes the promise of “A happy ending for all our friends who never thought they would.”

Detich also stuck around for the encore of David Bowie’s “Fame,” and wrote afterwards, “What a beautiful, safe festival we are at. Staff is on point. Concert goers staying in their pods. Great sound and lights. We are back!”
