For a recent episode of The Late Show‘s new “At-Home” format, My Morning Jacket’s Jim James performed his version of the Bill Withers classic “Lean on Me.”

Of course, the emotional offering was a nod to the late musician, who died earlier this week.

James also reflected on Withers passing on his Instagram, recalling a meeting at Brooklyn’s Prospect Park: “It was one of the greatest honors of my life to share that stage with [Bill Withers] and get to bask in the power of his holy voice there in person. Wow. The energy coming off that man was sacred power. After the concert everyone including Bill was SO STOKED! We were hugging and laughing and he said one of the best things anyone had ever said to me – He said ‘Man – do it your way – exactly how you want to do it. Don’t ever let anyone tell you how to live your life or do your thing.” and gave me a big hug. And off into the night we went. I cannot state in words how much bills voice and music have shaped me over the years and how fortunate I felt to even get to spend just a little time with him.”
