On Dec. 13 and 14, the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, N.Y. hosted shows celebrating Jerry Garcia, dubbed “Home For The Holidays.” The shows featured an all-star band of bassist Oteil Burbridge, guitarist Tom Hamilton, keyboardist Melvin Seals, drummer Duane Trucks and vocalists Lady Chi and Jacklyn LaBranch. Lady Chi has been performing with Melvin Seals and JGB since early 2018, and LaBranch was a part of the Jerry Garcia Band from 1982 until their final shows in 1995.
Dec. 13’s show began with “Lay Down Sally” and featured a late-set segment of “China Doll” > “Alabama Getaway.” The second set opened with “Mighty High,” followed by a rendition of Bob Dylan’s “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door.” The set continued with the Jerry Garcia Band classic “Cats Under The Stars” and closed with the beloved Grateful Dead tune “Deal.”
On Dec. 14, the band opened with “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You),” followed by “Expressway (To Your Heart).” The remainder of the set was dominated by quintessential Grateful Dead songs, including “Shakedown Street,” “Eyes of the World” and the Dead’s version of “Dancing in the Streets.” The second set began with “Stop That Train” and featured a standout segment of “Scarlet Begonias” > “Positively 4th Street.” “Rubin and Cherise” closed, followed by a “Shining Star” encore. For both nights, Tom Hamilton played a Fender Stratocaster, an unusual choice for the guitarist.
