On Friday Nov. 29, Phish began their 2019 fall tour at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center in Providence, R.I. The first of two shows at the venue, Friday night was highlighted by a “Bye Bye Foot” bustout, a Phish debut of “Maybe” by Vida Blue, and a second set that weaved in “Plasma” throughout.

The first set began with “First Tube,” followed by the only Kasvot Vaxt tune of the night, “The Final Hurrah.” After a trio of “NICU,” “Steam” and “Scent of a Mule,” the band began “Bye Bye Foot.” The Fishman-composed tune had not been played since Aug. 10, 1997, a whopping 705 shows ago. After the huge bustout, Phish continued with “No Men in No Men’s Land.” After the funky “Gumbo” and a rocking “My Soul,” Phish debuted the Vida Blue tune “Maybe.” “Sand” came next, which seemed like it would close the set. However, Phish had other plans, as they dropped into “Fire” by Jimi Hendrix, which was last played on Aug. 5, 2017 during the Baker’s Dozen run.

“46 Days” kicked off the second set, followed by a particularly interesting “Back on the Train.” “Plasma” followed, featuring the first true type-two jam of the tour. While not particularly long, the 13-plus minute jam displayed Phish’s power to jam efficiently; the band moved effortlessly between keys as they built the jam to a thrilling peak. “Farmhouse” came next, serving as an early cool-down song. “Light” followed, featuring a jam that led into the first of two “Plasma” reprises. Standard versions of “Birds of a Feather” and “Joy” preceded a fourth-quarter segment of “Simple” -> “Set Your Soul Free” -> “Plasma.” Finally, an energetic cover of James Gang’s “Walk Away” closed the set.

Following the trend they set this summer, Phish offered a four song encore, playing “Meatstick,” “Sleep,” “Driver” and “Bug.”
