Billy & The Kids—the supergroup that features Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann, Joe Russo’s Almost Dead/Ghost Light guitarist Tom Hamilton, Disco Biscuits keyboardist Aron Magner and Tea Leaf Green/Electric Beethoven bassist Reed Mathis—are hinting at a reunion with some teaser posts on social media.
The band’s own pages recently posted a photo of Kreutzmann with the caption “Tap, tap, is this thing on?” along with the names of all four members. Kretuzmann’s own pages shared that post, adding, “Check 1-2, 1-2.” More information will likely be released soon.
Kreutzmann officially formed Billy & The Kids in 2015, debuting the project at Warren Haynes’ annual Xmas Jam in Asheville, NC, but the group really began at Virginia’s LOCKN’ Festival in 2015, when Kreutzmann, Hamilton, Magner, bassist Oteil Burbridge and keyboardist Jeff Chimenti performed as the Locknstep Allstars for a set after Bob Weir & RatDog canceled their festival slot. During that gig, and after solidifying the quartet lineup in 2015, Billy & The Kids have collaborated with a number of special and surprise guests, including at a LOCKN’ 2015 set that featured Kreutzmann’s Grateful Dead bandmates Weir and Mickey Hart. Watch video from that night below, and stay tuned for more info on the Billy & The Kids reunion.

October 30, 2019 at 3:09 pmReed Mathis is no longer a member of TLG, and thank God! He ruined that band to the like of which it will never recover. Those stupid bass lines/solos had the audience cringing. Josh Clark’s guitar playing was simply overwhelmed by Reed’s nonsense.
Reed’s a nice guy though.

““That Christmas Jam was special for me, not only because it was our first show, but also because it was one of the last times I got to play music with my dear friend Col. Bruce Hampton, darn it,” Kreutzmann adds. “We took the music to improvisational places we never could’ve rehearsed, and that immediate willingness to go far-out like that was just us responding to the fantastic energy of a sold-out arena, full of music fans who didn’t know what to expect from this band but who were just as excited as us to find out. There’s always been a certain magic surrounding Billy & the Kids shows, but this was, as they say, where it all began.”
