On Saturday, Sept. 28, Vulfpeck hit a career benchmark by making their headlining debut at New York City’s famed Madison Square Garden.

For the sold-out show, the band offered a single set filled with funky favorites and plenty of special guests.

After opening with “Animal Spirits,” “Cory Wong” and “My First Car,” the band welcomed their first sit-in of the night with drummer Nate Smith adding extra percussion to “Daddy He Got A Tesla.” (Smith appeared earlier in the evening as a part of opening act The Fearless Flyers.)

Then, Vulfpeck invited “two of the world’s current virtuosos on tiny small instruments” Chris Thile (mandolin) and Dave Koz (sopranino saxophone) to jam on “Smile Meditation.”

A stirring, mid-set version of “Baby I Don’t Know Oh Oh” featured vocalist-keyboardist Charles Jones, and by the time Vulfpeck’s show came to a close, they had the entire venue singing along to “Christmas in LA,” despite the fact that it was only late September.

The band closed with Dean Town, and offered a two-part encore of “Birds of a Feather, We Rock Together” and “It Gets Funkier.”
