For their Friday night gig at LA’s Greek Theatre, Joe Russo’s Almost Dead were feeling particularly collaborative, welcoming Stuart Bogie of Antibalas to add flute and sax throughout the night’s proceedings, and inviting Fruit Bats frontman Eric D. Johnson for a batch of tunes.

After jamming through a four-song set one, starting with “Dancing in the Street” and ending with “Terrapin Station,” the band’s second frame kicked off with an “Unbroken Chain” featuring Johnson.

JRAD then worked through the classic pairing of “Lost Sailor”> “Saint of Circumstance,” and eventually make their way to a closing, two-part segment of “Brown-Eyed Women”> “Truckin’.”

Before welcoming Johnson back out for the encore, drummer Joe Russo called his drum tech Evan Roque onstage to thank him for taking on the role of drummer for two shows in July when Russo’s wife unexpectedly went into labor three weeks early.

Afterwards, Johnson stuck around for all four encore tunes, including JRAD’s live debuts of The Zombies’ “This Will Be Our Year,” Fruit Bats’ “When U Love Somebody” and Van Morrison’s “Caravan.”  They closed the show with “Not Fade Away.”
