On Thursday night, Billy Joel returned to his home venue, New York’s Madison Square Garden, for a special performance that marked his 110th show at the famed venue, along with his 70th birthday celebration, which featured friend and family joining the Piano Man on stage throughout the evening, along with some video shoutouts from around the world.
Joel opened the night with “Big Shot,” followed by the first shoutout of the night, a video from Pink, who sang a bit of Joel’s “Just the Way You Are.” Other videos presented to Joel throughout the performance featured birthday wishes from the likes of Paul McCartney, AC/DC’s Brian Johnson, Don Henley and Garth Brooks.
After a run of Rolling Stones covers, “Satisfaction” and “Start Me Up,” Joel welcomed out his daughter Alexa Ray for his classic “New York State of Mind.” Alexa Ray then brought out Joel’s young daughter Della Rose to help lead the crowd in “Happy Birthday” for their father.
A couple songs later, iconic guitarist and singer-songwriter Peter Frampton emerged to help Joel and his band out with two of Frampton’s own tunes, “Show Me the Way” and “Baby, I Love Your Way.” Later, after the set-closing “Scenes From an Italian Restaurant” and “Piano Man,” Joel returned to the MSG stage for a four-song encore of “We Didn’t Start the Fire,” “Uptown Girl,” “It’s Still Rock and Roll to Me” and “You May Be Right,” the last of which saw Frampton return for the finale.
