South Carolina’s Trondossa Music & Arts Festival returned to North Charleston this past weekend for its second annual gathering, offering two days of music in memory of the late Col. Bruce Hampton, and the festivities wrapped up on Sunday with two more performances from headliners Widespread Panic and Umphrey’s McGee, both of whom welcomed guests during their closing sets.

First up were Umphrey’s, who kicked off their one-set finale on Sunday evening with “Rocktopus” and fit in some tunes from their 2018 albums like “Half Delayed” and “Season” along with live staples like “Wappy Sprayberry.” The band also welcomed out vocalist Kanika Moore, who fronts UM bassist Ryan Stasik’s side-project Doom Flamingo, for a cover of Led Zeppelin’s classic “Kashmir.”

To close out Trondossa, 2019, Widespread Panic took the stage for two celebratory sets, starting with an opening frame that closed out with a cover of Funkadelic’s “Red Hot Mama” that featured Umphrey’s McGee keyboardist Joel Cummins as their first surprise guest of the night. Panic’s second set opened with “B of D” (following up set one’s “A of D” opener) and later featured a cover of David Bromberg’s “Sharon” featuring guitar and vocals from Marcus King, who played Trondossa with his own band on Saturday. King also stuck around for another cover of Traffic’s “Dear Mr. Fantasy” before Panic launched into a round of “Drums” that segued into “Saint Ex” and then into “Trondossa,” the Col. Bruce Hampton tune from which the festival draws its name. The band then wrapped up Trondossa 2019 with a “Fishwater” finale that ended with fireworks shooting over the stage.

Next up for Widespread Panic is a headlining slot at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival this Thursday, May 2. Umphrey’s McGee have just one gig on their schedule, May 10 at Charlotte, NC’s Shout! Festival, before they head back to Chillicothe, IL, for their annual Summer Camp gathering later in the month.
