On Wednesday night, the Karina Rykman Experiment made their headlining debut at New York City’s Rough Trade, offering up a few covers and a number of improv-laced originals.

While the trio has performed at events like Brooklyn Comes Alive and put on after-parties for bands like Joe Russo’s Almost Dead and Phish, their Rough Trade gig marked their first headlining spot in prime time.

The band kicked things off with their original “Plants” and then moved into a two part “Elevator”> “Pets” jam, the latter tune being a cover of Porno for Pyros.

From there, KRE offered up their own “Goji Island” and “2fish 1fish” before seguing into George McCrae’s “I Get Lifted.” The jams continued through Wilco’s “Spiders (Kidsmoke),” and the band closed their single set with their original “Penne Alla Vodka.”

“People seemed stoked on it, and we have a month until our Boston, Burlington and Portsmouth gigs so I’m real stoked to see what we cook up between now and then,” Rykman said after the performance. “It’s so fun for me, to be working with these two fellas Adam [November] and Chris [Corsico] who are just down for anything and love to create as much as I do.”
