On Saturday night, Melvin Seals & JGB headlined The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, NY, and the evening turned into a collaboration-heavy affair, which featured an opening set from Disco Biscuits bassist Marc Brownstein’s new, funk-leaning project, Star Kitchen.

Brownstein’s outfit kicked off the night with a set that saw the band welcome trumpeter and vocalist Jennifer Hartswick, longtime member of Trey Anastasio Band and collaborator of Star Kitchen keyboardist Rob Marscher. Hartswick joined the group for a cover of James Brown’s “Hot Pants Road” and J.J. Cale’s “After Midnight” at the beginning of the show, then returned later in the supporting set for Aretha Franklin’s “Rock Steady,” “Jan Jan” and Billy Preston’s “Will It Go Round in Circles.”

To open up their own headlining set, JGB welcomed out Brownstein for “Tore Up Over You,” while Hartswick again returned to the stage for several tunes, including “Piece of My Heart,” Jimmy Cliff’s “Sitting in Limbo,” the Grateful Dead’s “Bird Song” and Bob Dylan’s “Gotta Serve Somebody.”

Coincidentally, the first time that Brownstein’s Disco Biscuits played their home-base venue, Philadelphia’s Electric Factory, was then the group opened for Seals and JGB in April 1997.
