Dave Matthews Band returned to their home base of Charlottesville, VA, on Friday night for the first of two tour-closing shows at John Paul Jones Arena. The concerts are both helping to raise money for housing development in Charlottesville, and last night’s weekend opener featured special guests Preservation Hall Jazz Band, who are providing support for both nights.

DMB’s performance kicked off with the first “Big Eyed Fish” of their fall tour, followed by another Busted Stuff cut, “Bartender.” Next up were a few staples, “Satellite,” “Samurai Cop (Oh Joy Begin)” and “#41,” followed by “Again and Again” from the band’s latest album, Come Tomorrow.

Matthews and company also fit in another cover of Aerosmith’s “Sweet Emotion,” which has been a go-to this fall, once again taking the song into their own “Minarets.” One of the night’s highlights followed, with the host band welcoming members of New Orleans staples Pres Hall—including Ben Jaffe, Branden Lewis, Charlie Gabriel, Clint Maedgen, Kyle Roussel, Ronell Johnson and Walter Harris—to the stage for “That Girl Is You,” the bouncy Come Tomorrow cut that Pres Hall also joined DMB on earlier this year at the Gorge in Washington state.

The rest of last night’s performance featured favorites like “Don’t Drink the Water,” “Dancing Nancies” and “Grey Street,” plus a cover of Peter Gabriel’s “Sledgehammer” and an encore of DMB holiday-themed tune “Christmas Song” and their signature cover of Bob Dylan’s “All Along the Watchtower,” which closed out the show.
