On Friday night at the U.S. Cellular Center in Asheville, NC, Warren Haynes continued his annual Christmas Jam weekend—which kicked off on Thursday with some surprise collaborations during the Pre-Jam—with the first of two all-star, guest-filled nights at the venue, including Haynes leading Gov’t Mule in a “Dark Side of the Mule” Pink Floyd headlining set featuring a sit in from My Morning Jacket frontman Jim James.

As with the Pre-Jam, last night’s Jam proper opened with a short solo set from Haynes, who welcomed Nashville singer-songwriter Ray Sisk for a couple of the latter’s tunes, “The King of Country Music” and “Glory Road,” which Haynes included on his Ashes & Dust album. Marco Beveneto’s trio then took the stage for a run of the keyboardist’s “The Story of Fred Short” suite and more.

Opening the side-stage festivities for the night was a group made up of former Black Crowes guitarist Audley Freed, My Morning Jacket drummer Patrick Hallahan, bassist Robert Kearns and keyboardist Jen Gunderman. The outfit opened with the seasonally appropriate “Winter Wonderland” and ended up welcoming a number of guests, including Jimmy Vivino, Joanne Shaw Taylor, Jamey Johnson and Kevn Kinney.

Johnson then took to the main stage with his own band for a set that featured more guests, with Freed joining the group on “I Think I’ll Just Stay Here and Drink” and Haynes helping out on “It Hurts Me Too.” After a side-stage performance from the Tyler Ramsey Band, the audience got a double dose of Phish bassist Mike Gordon, first with his solo band’s set that featured a number of his solo-album cuts plus his cover of Aerosmith’s “Sweet Emotion,” then with a Gordon and Scott Murawski duo show on the side stage.

Haynes then returned to the side stage for another couple of tunes, performing “Captured” with James and Fleetwood Mac’s “Gold Dust Woman” with James and Grace Potter. Potter was next up on the main stage, offering a set that featured saxophonist Ron Holloway on “Paris” and a closing run of Bob Dylan’s “I Shall Be Released.” Two more performance closed out the night’s side-stage activities, first with singer Maris welcoming Vivino, Freed, Kearns and Hallahan, followed by Taylor’s equally guest-filled set featuring Vivino, Freed, Kearns and Hallahan.

The final offering of the night was Mule’s Dark Side headlining set, with Haynes leading the group on Pink Floyd favorites like “Time,” “The Great Gig in the Sky,” “Money,” “Comfortably Numb” and more, including a run of “Us & Them” that featured James as a special guest. Haynes and company closed out night one of the Jam with an encore of “Wish You Were Here.”
