Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio and Grammy-winning bassist Christian McBride joined Jennifer Hartswick and guitarist Nick Cassarino at New York City’s Rockwood Music Hall on Wednesday night for a three song sit-in.

Hartswick, a vocalist-trumpeter for Trey Anastasio Band, is in the midst of a duo tour with Cassarino (The Nth Power) in support of her new LP Nexus.

A little after 10:45 p.m., Cassarino warmed up the intimate crowd with a cover of Sam Cooke’s “A Change is Gonna Come.” He then welcomed Hartswick to the stage for a slate of material from her new album as well as a couple of covers.

After opening with Bobby Bland’s “I Wouldn’t Treat a Dog (The Way You Treated Me),” the duo played Nexus cut “Drowning,” a tune Hartswick mentioned was the first she and Cassarino ever wrote together.

Later, Hartswick and Cassarino offered up covers of T-Bone Walker’s “Stormy Monday,” BB King’s “How Blue Can You Get,” John Prine’s classic “Angel From Montgomery” as well as Rihanna’s “Stay,” before McBride jumped onstage to pick up an upright bass. The Grammy winner, and producer of Hartswick’s new album, added the low end and backing vocals to Hartswick’s original “Numb.”

Anastasio then joined in for Nexus cut “You Can’t Take It Back,” which bled into a trio jam between Anastasio, Cassarino and McBride. Hartswick briefly stood to the side of the stage, but after a few minutes, she rejoined the jam, laying down a fiery trumpet solo and eliciting major cheers from the crowd. The quartet followed with a take on Nexus‘s “Silent Waves.”

Hartswick, Anastasio, McBride and Cassarino closed with “Drown in My Own Tears,” (once made famous by Ray Charles) playing no encore and leaving the intimate NYC crowd cheering for more.
