Reprise Records has announced they will release a new Tom Petty box set, An American Treasure, on September 28. The 60-track offering will feature a number of newly discovered and previously unreleased songs from Petty’s vaults, plus alternate takes, rarities and live performances.
An American Treasure, which was commissioned and curated by the collective of Petty’s daughter Adria, wife Dana, Heartbreakers bandmates Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench, and collaborator Ryan Ulyate, will be available in four iterations: a deluxe 4-CD set with a 52-page booklet featuring liner notes from journalist Bud Scoppa, photographs and more; a 4-CD super deluxe set with an 84-page hardcover book, handwritten lyrics and a lithograph from album cover artist Shepard Fairey; a 6-LP vinyl set (available November 28); and a 2-CD standard edition with 26 select tracks from the collection.
“Everyone involved in this project chose each track with tremendous care and deep respect for the body of work Tom Petty created over the course of 40 years,” a statement from Adria and Dana reads. “He also accumulated a wealth of unreleased music in his vaults, and we have collectively uncovered one gem after another that will keep us all listening and discovering new facets of Tom’s talent for many years to come. We can’t wait to share with Tom’s fans this musical portrait of an artist who deeply affected our culture and indelibly touched the lives of fans the world over.”
A preview of the box set, the previously unreleased “Keep A Little Soul,” has been released along with an accompanying video with footage of Petty in the studio and on stage. The song was recorded in 1982 as part of Petty and The Heartbreakers’ album Long After Dark.
