Legendary funk pioneers The Meters were set to play two shows at The Fillmore in San Francisco this weekend, but the band has been forced to cancel the dates due to keyboardist Art Neville’s illness.

Bassist George Porter Jr. announced the news in a post on his Facebook page, saying that Neville is unable to travel to SF at this time and “is currently under medical evaluation in New Orleans.”

While musicians, including Ivan Neville, have sat in for Art or supported the quartet in the past, there has not been an “Original” Meters show without the keyboardist, who is the eldest member of the band and also plays with Porter Jr. in the Funky Meters. “We send our best to Art, His Family and all the fans,” Porter continues.
“It’s a very, very tough decision to cancel any shows, but without Art, these shows would not be The Meters.

Ticket refunds for the shows, which were slated for Friday and Saturday, are available at point of purchase.
