Dark Star Orchestra hosted their annual Dark Star Jubilee at Legend Valley Concert Venue and Campground in Thornville, OH, over Memorial Day weekend. Trey Anastasio Band trumpeter Jennifer Hartswick was on site performing with her eponymous band on Saturday and made the rounds as well.

That evening, during event headliner DSO’s original elective show, Hartswick emerged near the end of the group’s first set for a take on the classic Grateful Dead original “Scarlet Begonias.” She then remained on stage for the Dead’s variation of the traditional “Going Down the Road Feeling Bad,” which featured an outro that consisted of the spiritual “We Bid You Goodnight.”

In addition, during Melvin Seals & JGB’s show earlier in the day, Hartswick, who has collaborated with the Jerry Garcia Band offshoot recently, played trumpet throughout the entire spot. The performance kicked off with an instrumental reading of The Soul Survivors’ “Expressway to Your Heart” and then moved into Eric Clapton’s “Lay Down Sally,” Van Morrison’s “And It Stoned Me,” Norton Buffalo’s “Ain’t No Bread in the Breadbox,” Arthur “Big Boy” Crudup’s “That’s All Right,” Roy Hamilton’s “Don’t Let Go” and an instrumental version of Stevie Wonder’s “I Was Made to Love Her.” Adding to the festivities, DSO keyboardist Rob Barraco also joined in the final three songs.

Also of note, on Friday, Barraco emerged partway through Peter Rowan and Sam Grisman’s collaborative performance to appear on “Cold Rain and Snow.” He then remained on stage for “Emd,” The Rolling Stones’ “Wild Horses,” Seatrain’s “Mississippi Moon” and Rowan’s own “Sweet Melinda.” During the weekend, DSO also honored their longtime publicist Dave Weismann, who is moving on after over 25 years and 2,700 shows, by bringing him on stage and awarding him a GOAT trophy.

Dark Star Orchestra will return to the road on June 11 for a performance in Cliford, NH. Hartswick will perform with Marcus King at the Nashville Municipal Auditorium this evening. The Honky Tonk Horns, Lamont Landers, Mickey Raphael, Paul Franklin and Billy Contreras will also sit in.
