Dogs in a Pile rolled into New Orleans last night for a performance at the Toulouse Theatre. As the musical celebration of New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival continues across the city, the rising jam quintet spiced up their late-night show and saluted their hosts with a setlist that included three first-time covers.
Dogs in a Pile took the stage at midnight on Tuesday at the end of another long day and night of shows across The Big Easy. To welcome their fans and any other French Quarter passersby seeking top-tier live improvisation, they lit into the recent live staple “Unfocused,” merged with its regular pairing of “The Bag.” The group quickly paid tribute to New Orleans’ funk greats with their first-ever take on The Meters’ 1972 hit “Cabbage Alley,” then, after turning to their recent studio album Distroid with “Samba for Sam,” let loose a debut cover of Allen Toussaint’s “Last Train.”
Between the fan favorite “Go Set” and a set-closer of “Trunk Rum,” Dogs in a Pile expanded their repertoire with a new cover of Stevie Wonder’s Music of My Mind essential “Love Having You Around.” Finally, to cap off the concert, the band began their encore with their third performance to date of “This Little Light of Mine,” then fell into the familiar frenetic funk of “Chop Shop.”
Dogs in a Pile will move on to a three-night run in Texas next, stopping at Austin’s Mohawk, Houston’s House of Blues and Dallas’ Deep Ellum Art Company from April 30 to May 2. Shortly afterward, they’ll fly down to San José del Cabo to take part in Goose’s second-annual Viva El Gonzo destination festival.
