The Nth Power will release their fourth studio album, Never Alone, on May 1. The trio–drummer Nikki Glaspie, guitarist Nick Cassarino and bassist Nate Edgar—converged at a farmhouse studio in Colchester, Vermont at the invitation of Phish bassist Mike Gordon to create the LP, crafting the set during a two-week session.
“Vermont has an energy, there’s something special in the air,” Cassarino said in a statement. “We were there recording late into the early morning hours one night during a lunar eclipse, and it was like the whole atmosphere changed. The creative force and beauty of where we were was just ridiculous.”
When announcing the album, the band elaborated, saying “Under the shadow of a lunar eclipse, in a remote Vermont farmhouse overlooking Lake Champlain, [we] tapped into ‘The Great Spirit.'”
The album also features some special guests, including jazz trumpeter Nicholas Payton, saxophonist Skerik, former bandmate Courtney Smith and New Orleans brass collective The Soul Rebels. In advance of Never Alone‘s release, Nth Power have also dropped the record’s first single, “Dream Alive,” as well as its accompanying music video, which was filmed at San Francisco’s historic Glide Memorial Church.
Edgar explained in a statement, “’Dream Alive’ captures our raw and unapologetic musical approach with its driving rhythms and lyrical message. Everybody’s musical contributions really shine through on this song.” Meanwhile Cassarino added in the same statement, “‘Dream Alive’ is a song about rolling with your crew–the chosen family we get to live life with. It’s a song about living the dream and being alive. [The main cord progression] I came up with as an alternate bridge part for the Jackson 5 song ‘I Want You Back’ during my tenure in the Village Underground house band in New York.”
“We created this album with the intention of sharing love back into the world, with the understanding that all people deserve love–we believe in the power of love, and emit that belief through our music. This album is a culmination of our calling as musicians and human beings on this planet. We want to take the message as far as it can go,” Glaspie explained,” while Edgar added, “Never Alone really represents who we are as a band that can’t be defined by one musical genre.”
The Nth Power will support Never Alone with a mix of headlining dates and shows opening for Snarky Puppy. Cassarino will also showcase his newest originals in a trio format at New York’s Soho Live on March 21.
