Dave Matthews Band’s annual campout at George, WA’s Gorge Amphitheater continued last night. A day after the group busted out the Everyday single “I Did It” for the first time in 10 years, they loaded last evening’s setlist with a variety of other surprises.
Bella Fleck & The Flecktones served as one of the night’s opening acts, and at the end of their set, the group invited out former member Jeff Coffin to sit in on Victor Wooten’s “Sinister Minister.”
Coffin, a current member of Dave Matthews Band, was part of The Flecktones for many years before taking up his current post as saxophonist in DMB. Last night also marked a rare moment where Coffin played alongside Howard Levy, a founding member of the Flecktones, who he replaced in the group for several years. Of note, Coffin will join The Flecktones on their upcoming holiday tour with Levy.
During Dave Matthews Band’s headlining set, the group brought longtime friend and crew member Joe Lawlor to sit in on “Cornbread.” Soon after, they welcomed the entire Flecktones lineup for an extended 16-minute plus version of”#41″. It marked the first time that Levy had sat with DMB, although the rest group has joined the band on occasion over the years. Then, a few songs later, Dave Matthews Band, shocked all in attendance by running through their landmark 1998 album Before These Crowded Streets in its entirety–the first time the group has performed one of their LPs in full and sequential order. Fleck, who contributed to the album, in on “The Last Stop” and “Don’t Drink the Water.” Jake Renick Simpson, a fiddler current touring with Lukas Nelson’s group who joined Dave Matthews Band at the Gorge on Friday, also emerged for a few selections, including “Pig,” “Spoon,” “Satellite” and “Tripping Billies.” (Fleck returned to the stage for “Spoon” and “Satellite” as well.) Though Dave Matthews Band used fiddle as one of their signature elements for many years, since longtime member Boyd Tinsley departed the band, they have not toured with a fiddler. However, this summer, they’ve had a few guest fiddlers join the band on stage. Also of note, Dave Matthews Band opened their set with their version of Bob Dylan’s “All Along the Watchtower” for the first time since 1993–the song more often appears near the close of their show.
Dave Matthews will close their annual Gorge run this evening. Goose will be one of the bands support act.
