Producer and guitarist, Adam C. Tenenbaum has maintained an intimate connection with the music of the Grateful Dead over the years. He has worked with Mickey Hart on loops and effects during “Drums & Space” sequences with Dead & Company. He also contributed textural guitars and sound design to Oteil Burbridge’s 2023 release, A Lovely View Of Heaven, which focused on Jerry Garcia-Robert Hunter ballads.
Tenenbaum, who also is one-half of Wooden Flowers, with Michal Menert, creates his own music as Giant Metal Crickets. He has just released a new song under that moniker, which offers an ambient-chill take on the Garcia-Hunter classic “China Doll.” He describes this interpretation as incorporating “ethereal, siren-song guitars and a procession of organ, brass and dissociated piano bursts float over a stark and hypnotic rhythm, creating a sonic penumbra, ultimately shifting toward light and release.”
Oteil Burbridge supplies the vocals on this version of “China Doll,” which streams below.
