As Los Angeles begins the process of rebuilding following the historic surge of wildfires that devastated Southern California just weeks ago, the music community has come together to champion recovery for one of its epicenters. The latest and largest of these endeavors is Good Music to Lift Up Los Angeles, a new 90-track charity compilation featuring contributions from a staggering litany of starts.

Good Music to Lift Up Los Angeles continues a series of benefit albums curated and arranged by author Dave Eggers and Brilliant Corners Artist Management’s Dave Kurland, who raised $550 thousand for voter’s rights organizations with two editions of Good Music to Avert the Collapse of American Democracy in 2020. A number of the high-profile artists featured on those releases–including R.E.M., My Morning Jacket, Real Estate, Courtney Barnett, Tenacious D and The War On Drugs–have returned with more unreleased recordings, including unheard songs, covers, remixes, live versions and demos.

The full tracklist for Good Music to Lift Up Los Angeles has not yet been released, but the artist lineup alone is incredibly impressive. Other indie icons participating in the charitable collection include Animal Collective, Cassandra Jenkins, TV on the Radio, Cold War Kids, Cunningham Bird, Faye Webster, Jeff Tweedy, Lucius, The Hold Steady, Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, Modest Mouse, Neko Case, Little Dragon, Mudhoney, The New Pornographers, Perfume Genius, HEALTH, Ty Segall and Dawes, whose core duo of brothers Taylor and Griffin Goldsmith both lost their Palisades homes to the fires.

The roster also features jam scene favorites like King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, Eggy, Neal Francis, Dr. Dog, Hippo Campus, I’m with Her, Friko, Soul Asylum and Pachyman, as well as rapidly rising stars like MJ Lenderman, The Heavy Heavy, Militarie Gun, Hurray for the Riff Raff, LA LOM, Cumgirl8, This is Lorelei and Water from Your Eyes, plus enticing collaborations like Centro-Matic feat. Jason Isbell & Sadler Vaden, Dirty Projectors & Stargaze, Death Cab for Cutie & The Postal Service and Mac DeMarco’s “Piece of the Fuck”

“We only had a few weeks to put this compilation together and are absolutely humbled by the contributions,” Kurland reflects. “Music is a healing force and we hope this collection of songs, in addition to raising much needed recovery funds, provides some solace.”

Good Music to Lift Up Los Angeles will be available to purchase for 24 hours only this Friday, February 7 at 12 a.m. PT via Good Music’s Bandcamp page. The 90-track exclusive release costs $20.25, and all net proceeds will benefit affected and displaced people of Los Angeles through the California Community Foundation’s Wildfire Recovery Fund and the LA Food Bank; Bandcamp will send their cut to MusiCares.
