With a long year of touring nearly concluded, Karl Denson is already looking forward to taking his music on the road again in 2025. This week, the jam-fusion wind wizard announced his Winter Tour with Tiny Universe, his longtime independent outfit. In January, the genre-bending psychedelic jazz ensemble will make four stops through the West, with three stagings in the bandleader’s home state of California and a single-night escapade to Nevada.
Denson’s Tiny Universe will embark on its winter sprint on Jan. 23 with an engagement at The Guild Theatre in Menlo Park. The band will then head north to the capital city of Sacramento to take the stage on the following evening, Jan. 24, at Ace of Spades. After the encore, the saxophonist and his team will make the haul out to Stateline, Nevada for a show in the South Shore Room of Harrah’s Lake Tahoe on Jan. 25. Finally, KDTU will bring its Winter Tour to a close at Chico, Calif.’s Lost on Main on Nov. 15. This series will prime the band for a pair of festival performances in February, first at Olympia, Wash.’s Olympia Folk Fest, then on the highly-anticipated Jam Cruise 21 from Feb. 14-19.
In 2024 so far, Denson has helmed several quick tours with Tiny Universe and special events like his Super Freak Ball, a Halloween tribute to Rick James in New Orleans. He’s occupied his time otherwise as the touring saxophonist for The Rolling Stones, whose Hackney Diamonds Tour ran from April to July, and as a founding member of longtime soul-jazz favorites The Greyboy Allstars, who will continue their fall touring through Nov. 30. At the end of December, Denson will welcome a slew of special guests for Kosmic Konvergence performances in Del Mar, Calif. and Portland, Ore. on Dec. 27 and 28.
