In the wake of Phil Lesh’s tragic passing on Oct. 25, the music community across the world has poured out love for the legendary Grateful Dead bassist. Nowhere has this been more prominent than the San Francisco Bay Area, Lesh’s lifetime home and a hub for the jam community that helped to form. As the city’s latest salute to the icon, Music Heals International has announced a new portion of its upcoming Women Rock, Music Heals! event, titled “A Fare Thee Well to Phil and Friends.”

Set to stage on Dec. 9 at Mill Valley, Calif.’s Sweetwater Music Hall, this performance will once again share the sound that Lesh found with support from an ensemble of alumni from the bassist’s storied second act. The new portion in the 2024 presentation of Music Heals’ annual benefit concert will be grounded in a top-tier septet, featuring David Nelson, Melvin Seals, Jay Lane, Dan “Lebo” Lebowitz, Pete Sears, Barry Sless, Mookie Siegel and Elliott Peck, all of whom formerly supported Lesh on stage. This lineup will be elevated by sit-ins from special guests, who will arrive in surprises throughout the set.

Music Heals’ 2024 Women Rock, Music Heals! benefit concert was initially announced on Oct. 9, with a headline set from Americana sensation Joan Osborne. The concert will also include stagings from Haitian singer-songwriter Paul Beaubrun and the newly formed Music Heals International All Stars, comprising Holly Bowling, Angeline Saris, Daria Johnson and Bella Rayne. Lebowitz, who was also featured on the original bill, returns to the benefit after multiple previous stagings. The yearly event celebrates Music Heals’ student musicians supported through projects in Haiti, India and Venezuela, with all proceeds going to further the organization’s mission of sharing music education with communities in crisis around the world.

Tickets for Music Heals International’s Women Rock, Music Heals! benefit concert are available now. For more information on the nonprofit, visit mhinternational.org.
