We’re only a week in the wake of Halloween, and Christmas is bearing down on us already. Among the first signs of the ever-encroaching holiday season is “Maybe This Christmas,” a festive new collaborative track from the head-spinning pairing of former Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce and Stevie Nicks. This leftfield, yet, undeniably compelling combo didn’t appear out of thin air; the single is the second preview track for the forthcoming collection A Philly Special Christmas Party, the latest in a series of holiday albums from Kelce featuring teammates, Philadelphia music legends and now, the legendary vocalist for Fleetwood Mac.
“Maybe This Christmas” shows Kelce and Nicks trading verses from Ron Sexsmith’s 2002 holiday hit, delivering the soft and sentimental standard as a short and sweet acoustic arrangement. Both vocalists sound remarkably human and candid, forming delicate harmonies at the hook and ushering in the gentle wail of a pedal steel guitar at the bridge, courtesy of Philadelphia’s Mike “Slo-Mo” Brenner.
“I love ‘Maybe This Christmas’ for so many reasons – the shape of the melody, the way the chords have their own melodic arc, the feel – but I love it most of all for its message of hope and forgiveness,” says Charlie Hall, drummer for The War on Drugs, who handled production and percussion. “While the holidays are about togetherness, it also offers a time for reflection and sometimes that means considering ‘someone we love, someone we’ve lost, for reasons we can’t quite recall…’ And in today’s day and age, it’s nice to think that, indeed, ‘maybe this year love will appear deeper than ever before.’ I was really hoping this song would resonate with Jason when we were kicking around ideas for this record, and it’s clear from the way he inhabits that beautiful melody that it did. And to have Stevie Nicks, one of the all-time masters of emotional transference (and an all-time hero of mine) come in and amplify all this is such a dream. I love this duet so much.”
The new single follows “It’s Christmastime (In Cleveland Heights),” which figured Kelce alongside his brother Travis and Motownphilly vocal vanguard Boyz II Men last week. A Philly Special Christmas Party will be the third and final installment in the annual series that Jason began in 2022, still featuring other veteran Eagles Lane Johnson and Jordan Mailata. The album is set to release on Nov. 22, with all profits to be donated to Philadelphia-based charities.
