With the US presidential election only one week away, musicians, celebrities, and people of influence have used their social media platforms to endorse the candidate they deem fit to take office in January 2025. Among those lending their voice of political support is Grateful Dead rhythm guitarist Bobby Weir, who took to his official online platform to endorse Kamala Harris and Tim Walz’s bid for office.
In a message shared with friends and followers on Instagram and Facebook, Weir explained his position concerning the impending election, starting his statement: “Well, OK, I guess it all depends on your worldview; you can see your place in the world as something to defend from those who might want to take some or all of it from you—or you can see it as a grand adventure, a place to make dreams come to fruition for yourself and for others.”
Sharing the reasoning behind his decision, Weir continued, “There is, of course, an in-between place—but the more you lean toward the grand adventure side, the clearer the choice becomes. More good comes from focusing on building a world where disparities aren’t so pronounced that they cause friction and reducing the inequalities that create barriers.”
Offering his official endorsement, the Bay Area musician declared, “With these things in mind, I’ve done my research and come to the clear conclusion that I’ll be voting for @KamalaHarris and @TimWalz this time around.”
In addition to his message of support, Weir shared select images, including a photo of himself proudly donning a Harris/Walz 2024 champaign shirt, which co opted Grateful Dead iconography through the use of the band’s signature stealie, adorned with physical characteristics that bear a resemblance to Harris and Walz.
Also included is an image of Walz holding up the same shirt Weir wore while wearing a baseball cap featuring the band’s 13-point lightning bolt. Lastly, the third photo shows Weir and wife Natasha. The latter has been known to turn up on the side of the stage while her husband performs and supports heartfelt political movements. In the captured moment, Natasha wears a T-shirt that reads: Roe Roe Roe Your Vote, showing her support for pro-choice in the wake of the 2022 decision to overturn Roe v Wade.
Threading a connection between the political campaign and Grateful Dead, Natasha holds a poster featuring an image of Harris and the revered lines: “THAT’S RIGHT THE WOMEN ARE SMARTER.” Scroll down to view the aforementioned post.
