The 10 years since Goose’s formation in 2014 have been a wild ride. In a meteoric rise to the apex of the jam world, the band has earned distinction for such landmarks as leading high-profile festivals across the country, gracing the cover of Relix and collaborating with titans from icons from Vampire Weekend to Bob Weir and Trey Anastasio. Last night, Sept. 27, Goose commemorated that ongoing story with a 10th-anniversary performance at Los Angeles’ famous Greek Theatre, sharing two sets that spanned the band’s career and stacking fan favorites against surprises for a fitting celebration of its legacy.

Goose began its second show at the Greek with the moody slink of “Dr. Darkness,” which built steam with a powerful vocal performance for Rick Mitarotonda to warm the crowd for the high-spirited, bluesy Grateful Dead-esque “Hot Love & The Lazy Poet.” A ripping drum solo from the now fully-integrated new member Cotter Ellis led the band’s segue into “Turned Clouds,” off its 2016 project Moon Cabin. After an unfinished fast version of “Echo of a Rose” that burned into the band’s second-ever cover of Isley Juber’s “No California,” they reached an early highlight from the show with the hot and heavy emergent jam vehicle “Big Modern!,” which quintet debuted at the beginning of September. A rapturous “Give it Time” brought the first frame to a close.

To launch into the second set, Goose staged its beloved cover of The Who’s “Eminence Front” for the first time in its fall tour. This timeless entry set off a completely segued second set, moving effortlessly through a 20-minute jam on “Dripfield,” some virtuosic shredding from Peter Anspach at the core of “Yeti” and a glorious run of Foster the People’s “Pumped Up Kicks.” The indie groove quartet weaved back to “Yeti” after the singalong, then topped off the main portion of the performance with the first staging of “Arise” since March 2023 and the glistening Moon Cabin standout “Arcadia.” When the lights came back up, the band returned for a thrilling encore of “Hot Tea” to send the crowd off into the night.

Goose will conclude the first leg of its fall tour tonight, Sept. 28, with a show at Stanford, Calif.’s Frost Amphitheater. The group will return to Los Angeles on Oct. 1 for a newly announced special benefit performance termed “El Ganso,” with all proceeds going to La Playa Centro Comunitario, a community center in La Playa, Mexico. With further fall tour dates, Goosemas XI, the band’s New Year’s Formal Affair and an ominous potential getaway in the future, fans can be sure that Goose will have plenty more to celebrate soon.
