Today, Sept. 18, Jane’s Addiction make the most of their current media moment with the release of “True Love,” the second new single from the original quartet after 34 years. The iconic ‘90s alt-rock pioneers’ latest offering follows “Imminent Redemption,” which closed a 12-year release gap in July, and a dramatic week for the group that culminated in the cancellation of its reunion tour on Monday.

“True Love” shows a softer side of Jane’s Addiction, lending their talents to a haunting ballad that explores the drama and nuance of a whirlwind romance. Vocalist Perry Farrell leads a tense, moody and shadowy mix, accented by a slow-burn guitar melody from Navarro who brings the track to a boil in the fiery final passage. In the wake of a troubling falling out between the bandmates, the release gives fans some hope that this may not be the end for the ever-tumultuous four-decade rock outfit.

On Monday, after a rocky week on its long-awaited reunion run that culminated in an onstage melee on Friday night, Jane’s Addiction canceled all 14 outstanding stops on its co-headline tour with Love & Rockets. The quartet made its change of plans known with a post to its Instagram account, where they wrote that “The band have made the difficult decision to take some time away as a group. As such they will be canceling the remainder of the tour.”

In a separate post to their personal accounts, Navarro, bassist Eric Avery and drummer Stephen Perkins explained that the tension behind closed doors was due to the actions of Farrell, who threw a punch at the guitarist during their Sept. 13 performance in Boston after struggling with his voice earlier in the week. “Due to a continuing pattern of behavior and the mental health difficulties of our singer Perry Farrell, we have come to the conclusion that we have no choice but to discontinue the current US tour,” the musicians wrote. “Our concern for his personal health and safety as well as our own has left us no alternative. We hope that he will find the help he needs. We deeply regret that we are not able to come through for all our fans who have already bought tickets. We can see no solution that would either ensure a safe environment on stage or reliably allow us to deliver a great performance on a nightly basis.”

With these allegations in the open, Farrell came to account for his actions, issuing a statement of apology to his bandmates and fans. “This weekend has been incredibly difficult and after having the time and space to reflect, it is only right that I apologize to my bandmates, especially Dave Navarro, fans, family and friends for my actions during Friday’s show,” he wrote. “Unfortunately, my breaking point resulted in inexcusable behavior, and I take full accountability for how I chose to handle the situation.”

“True Love” is available on all streaming platforms now. Watch the official lyric video below, and stay tuned to janesaddiction.com for updates on the band.
