On Thursday, Sept. 5, the Hopscotch Music Festival returned to downtown Raleigh, N.C. Headlined by the likes of St. Vincent, Faye Webster, and fellow female powerhouse Waxahatchee, the lineup also showcased indie-leaning favorites, including improvisational masterminds, the four-piece conglomerate comprised of Alex Bleeker (Real Estate), Chris Thompson (Vampire Weekend), Dave Harrington (Darkside) and Zach Tenorio-Miller (Arc Iris), collectively known as Taper’s Choice.
During the group’s festival slot, which arrived at 11:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 6, the core members took advantage of the festival step-up by inviting fellow participants to join in during their frame. After concluding set one, which included the band’s debut take on Pink Floyd’s “Echoes” (left unfinished, in favor of “Sometimes Man”), Taper’s choice welcomed Tim Mislock, who has toured with Tegan and Sarah and The Antlers, for assistance during “Darkness on the Edge of Midtown” and their follow up.
Nick Sandborn filled the next guest slot on bass and modular synth during the ensuing instrumentals, which later developed into “Lilac Palace” and the set’s ending, “21 Miles.” Prior to Sandborn’s appearance at the Hopscotch Music Festival, he took part in Phish’s Mondegreen gathering in Dover, Del., this past August, delivering a DJ set under Made of Oak.
