On Wednesday, July 10, Dave Matthews Band turned up at PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel, N.J., in continuation of its current Summer 2024 Tour. The Garden State gig included an extra special guest, frequent collaborator and pedal steel guitarist Robert Randolph, who is on a short break before picking up S.E.R.P.E.N.T. Fest dates in late July.

The unannounced sit-in occurred during the latter half of the main frame, on Busted Stuff originator, “Grace is Gone,” and an ensuing and fitting rendition of “Hello Again,” acting as wordplay and a reference to the past. Notably, Randolph first sat in with DMB in 2002 and on multiple occasions throughout the last two decades, most recently during the band’s annual stand at The Gorge Amphitheater in Quincy, Wash., in 2021.

Following Randolph’s assistance, the band returned to standard form, adding “Typical Situation” and “Tripping Billies” before closing out the 18-song set with “You Might Die Trying.” Matthews returned for the start of the night’s encore, offering a solo delivery of “Here on Out” before the band returned for a sequence of “So Much to Say” > “Anyone Seen the Bridge” > “Too Much.”

DMB will follow up with another stop on its Summer Tour, slated for July 13 at Jiffy Lube Live in Bristow, Va. Tickets remain on sale.
