On June 7, psychedelic groove act Free Whenever delivered its official self-titled album via Immediate Family Records, a nine-track collection of instrumental suites comprised of previously dropped singles/set previews “Sicily,” “Precipice,” and “Calypso.” Following the release of their sonic deliverable, which aims to break genre barriers and resist minimizing musical boundaries, the group performed a record release show at FirstLive, the event production and streaming venue in Brooklyn, N.Y. Watch the pro-shot video from the event below.

According to the band’s official press release, the full-length set aims to showcase its growth by illuminating its distinct start as a duo-driven machine and transformation into a free-wheeling improv-focused trio. The intentionality behind the move follows Free Whenever’s belief in the practice of long-form improvisation, which resides in a space between form (saguna) and formlessness (nirguna), an element of their presentation that’s emphasized through genre exploration: vintage psychedelia, dub reggae, eastern modality, and African rhythmic traditions, with staunch and mesmerizing power.

Free Whenever LP is about exploding through meditation. Letting the music take you, both as a player and as a listener. The overarching goal of this record is to foster a collective experience and state of mind with our listeners and bring them closer into our world,” the band offered via a press release, touching on the pensive pull of their deliverables. Adding to the specialty of the set, Free Whenever will be dropping their self-titled set in vinyl form. As a bonus, a Dolby Atmosmix of “Sticky” provides fans with a multi-dimensional auditory experience, which shines the light on their immersive soundscapes.

Following the release of their album, the band performed a record release concert. Watch the video below. Purchase the band’s self-titled LP here. The band’s Dolby Atmos mix is set to release this Friday June 21.
