Today, June 11, recent Relix “On the Verge” artist Gregory McLoughlin released a new single, “Roses Grow,” alongside Abbe Rivers. His 15th single as a solo artist, and second track with Rivers, “Roses Grow” is both reminiscent of McLoughlin’s previous work and the clear product of a blossoming partnership between the two artists: Rivers’ soulful vocals complement and complicate McLoughlin’s confessional melody.
In McLoughlin’s view, the track is about a kind of temporary connection where two people’s paths intertwine briefly, and ultimately diverge, but still leaving an indelible imprint on both. The accompanying music video juxtaposes footage from McLoughlin’s home in Jersey City alongside clips from Sunrise, a French silent film from the 1920s. Regarding his decision to incorporate Sunrise into his work, McLoughlin stated that he has “always been deeply inspired by silent filmmaking, and the blessing of public domain has given artists the ability to find creative ways to bring new audiences to works of the past.”
With his audience, McLoughlin aspires for the same sort of meaningful connection he writes about: as a frequent livestream personality, McLoughlin performs every Monday evening for fans on Facebook and YouTube. Through more than 200 performances, the singer, songwriter and bass player’s viewership has expanded to a global audience. In addition to streamed performances, McLoughlin performs often in the greater New York area as Gregory McLoughlin & the Lemonade Band. He also writes for other artists, including Brianna Peterson, Julia Kirk, Beeman and Bannon, Ana Oh, Anthony Tamburro, Ross Sandler, Abbe Rivers, and Johnny Bullitt.
