On Wednesday, Real Estate kicked off their Infinite Jangle tour in support of their new album Daniel at San Francisco’s The Independent. The show was billed as a special Rock N Roll Bingo show, which featured a number of theatrics.

Before the gig, the group explained:

The band will be writing down the names of their own songs, some that you know and love along with some new ones from their forthcoming album ‘Daniel’, to be selected from a random-draw bingo ball cage machine. On stage, they’ll crank up the wheel and draw those balls randomly and will be ready to play whatever is thrown at them. Also in the mix will be some all new covers, non-song related shake ups (i.e switch instruments) and whatever else they can think of. Join them for a one of a kind show!

As promised, the bingo balls led to several different antics. Those included material from all of Real Estate’s LPs, a cover of Elton John’s “Daniel” and a take on Weezer’s “The Sweater Song,” which was a nod to the musicians’ days covering “The Blue Album” in high school. In addition, the balls led to bassist Alex Bleeker singing the Days song “Wonder Years” in the style of Bob Dylan, the band taking a encore break in the middle of the show and someone in the audience receiving a toaster.

The stunt capped off a busy few days for the New Jersey bred band. On February 21, Real Estate warmed up for their winter run with a surprise show at Kingston, NY’s Tubby’s. During the gig, they debuted two numbers from Daniel, “Somebody New” and “Say No More.” The next day, they hosted their “Daniel Show” at Brooklyn, NY’s Union Pool, which was technically only open to people named Daniel and their guests, but which actually served as their industry release party. Fully embracing the theme, Real Estate put together a wall of celebrity Daniels by the club’s entrance and both opened and closed with Elton John’s “Daniel,” a song they had not previously played live.

Finally, the following evening, on Daniel‘s release day, Bleeker, singer/guitarist Martin Courtney and drummer Sammi Niss played an acoustic Real Estate set at New York’s Rough Trade. The performance opened with a few acoustic songs from Daniel, before the trio launched into a few catalog cuts and a reprise of “Daniel.”

Real Estate will perform at Vancouver’s Hollywood Theatre tonight.
