Indie institution Woods has delighted fans with the announcement of their upcoming album titled Perennial, slated for release on Sept. 15 via Woodsist. Alongside the exciting news, the band has also shared a double lead single featuring the tracks “Between The Past” and “White Winter Melody.”
Since their formation in 2004, Woods has established themselves as a true independent force, consistently delivering new music that reaches for the skies while remaining rooted in their distinctive sound. The band operates their own Woodsist label, which has been active since 2006 and has curated the popular Woodsist Festival which showcases the musical universe they have built. Perennial exemplifies the band, now approaching their 20th anniversary, as still daring to sound like themselves while exploring new artistic territories.
The album comprises 11 songs–four of them instrumental–that traverse the realms of both the otherworldly and the comforting. “Between The Past” mesmerizes with its ethereal sounds, while the instrumental “White Winter Melody” envelops listeners in a scene of chilling fantasia embellished by the evocative pedal steel of Connor Gallaher. Accompanying the single “Between The Past” is a psychedelic split-screen voyage brought to life in a music video directed by Ian McNaughton.
Perennial grew from the foundation of Jeremy Earl’s guitar, keyboard, and drum loops—a form of winter night meditation that evolved into a collaborative songwriting approach uncharted by the band. Earl’s initial concepts served as starting points for creative exploration, as he, along with bandmates Jarvis Taveniere and John Andrews, convened at Earl’s New York residence before shifting their focus to the Panoramic House studio in Stinson Beach, Calif., where they previously recorded their 2020 album Strange To Explain. With the horizon of the Pacific Ocean and tape rolling, the trio set out on a journey of building upon the loops, experimenting, swapping instruments, and playing with a plethora of musical foundations.
Alongside the music, Earl contemplated the idea that “perennial plants and flowers are nature’s loops,” a concept subtly interwoven into the album’s lyrics, much like the loops themselves. This notion also extends to the band, who, despite being geographically separated, embody a collective spirit that shines through their collaboration, tapping the freedom found in every new piece of music they create together.
