On Monday, June 5, drum tech Joe Slaby posed some questions to Tool’s longtime backbeat, Danny Carey, in a video that was shared via social media. The clip, which spans less than a minute, features Slaby speaking directly to Carey from behind the camera–discussing the most complex numbers from the band’s archive to perform live.
Before providing an answer, Carey took a moment to contemplate his response, inevitably mentioning the 9-minute rock anthem which kicked off Tool’s 2001 album Lateralus: “The Grudge.” In the video, he said: “For endurance-wise, it’s ‘The Grudge.’” Before adding, “If we’re not in shape, in tour shape, that is, my hands almost cramp up ‘cause of all the Swiss triplets. And it’s just a real physical song overall, some double-kick stuff in it.”
Carey mentioned two additional songs, which appeared on their most recent album, Fear Inoculum, released in 2019. “The trickiest one might be ‘Invincible,’” he continued. “That or ‘7emptest,’ you know, the new ones, ‘cause I’m not as used to playing them.”
Both “7empest” and “Invincible” beat “The Grudge” in terms of length, coming in at almost 16 and 13 minutes, respectively. While neither has been played nearly as much live, “Invincible” has been a consistent closer for recent Tool concerts.
