Over the weekend, former Lotus member, Michael Rempel, delivered a stunning instrumental track in honor of his late bandmate Chuck Morris and his son, Charley. Dubbed “Love & Loss,” the eight-minute number captures two sides of grief experienced by the songwriter after the tragic passing of the father and son.

“Love & Loss” comes after Rempel penned a heartfelt letter to fans, questioning, “Where are you?” The note directly responded to Chuck and Charley Morris’ March 16 disappearance on Beaver Lake in Fayetteville, Ark., which occurred while the pair were kayaking during a family spring break excursion.

On his official Bandcamp page, Rempel shared the meaning behind the song. He wrote, “First, it captures the cutting pain of a beloved’s disappearance: the overwhelming sadness and cognitive incomprehension that seems to tear us apart when we can no longer behold the physicality of our loved one’s presence. It’s the experience of loss that, for a time, feels impossible to accept.”

Rempel continued, “Secondly, it captures the grace that can touch our hearts as we, however slowly, learn to let our beloved go. In that letting go, the essence and beauty of our beloved shines through with perfect clarity. We recognize that the gift of having shared this life with our loved one is a gift that can’t be taken away from us and that our love for them is ultimately timeless.”

“Love & Loss” has been shared via Bandcamp in an effort to raise funds for the Morris family. It is the latest in a series of tributes to the late musician and his son and comes after the announcement of four benefit concerts, April 21 and 22 at Denver’s Fillmore Auditorium, May 5 at XL Live in Harrisburg, Pa., and a May 6 show at Port Chester, N.Y.’s Capitol Theatre. Learn more.
