In anticipation of their eighth studio album, Weathervanes, due on June 9 via Southeastern Records/Thirty Tigers, GRAMMY-Award winners Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit have released a second track from the project, entitled “Middle of the Morning.”

The new track was written during the COVID-19 lockdowns and presented Isbell’s unique approach to narrative. The honest lyrics capture the feeling of being stuck in one place while the mind wanders and yearns for more. The track is steeped in melancholy and personifies global restrictions on a personal level.

Written and produced by Isbell, “Middle of the Morning” arrives after the initial single off the upcoming 13-track album, “Death Wish,” which dropped last month. Weathervanes was recorded at Nashville’s Blackbird Studio and features his band, the 400 Unit: Derry deBorja, Chad Gamble, Jimbo Hart and Sadler Vaden, in addition to special guests Amanda Shires and Mickey Raphael.

“There is something about boundaries on this record,” Isbell stated in the initial press release. “As you mature, you still attempt to keep the ability to love somebody fully and completely while you’re growing into an adult and learning how to love yourself.” Previously, the bandleader teased that the new batch of music is his “latest collection of grown-up songs.”
