Doom Flamingo and Lureto keyboardist Ross Bogan shared “LIQUIDCRYSTALDISPLAY,” the debut single for his new project, Wolf Mask. The single comes ahead of the Wolf Mask’s live debut set for Charleston Pour House in Charleston, S.C., on Saturday, Oct. 1.

The new project sees Bogan at his freest – so far – experimenting with different synths and pedals, layering at liberty, fully taking control while at times completely letting go. There’s a method and madness from Bogan that bleeds with a subtle flavor we’ve yet to hear.

“I’m finally taking the plunge into the solo realm am having a lot of fun with it. I made sure to include lots of gratuitous synth and pedal tweaking, hope you enjoy Wolf Mask,” Bogon told Jambands.com. “‘LIQUIDCRYSTALDISPLAY’ is the first single off of a full-length album to be released in 2023.”

The name and image behind the project happened spontaneously and simultaneously after his library of material accumulated more dust than he would have liked, as did a Halloween mask of a wolf he bought last fall – initially bought for a music video for Lureto – at the Hocus Pocus Halloween store on Highway 61.

Bogan told Extra Chill, whose festival he’ll be debuting as Wolf Mask, the story. “I grabbed this mask, and we went out to Woodlands and camped out that night. By the end of the night, we had a video. I wore the mask and grabbed some fake blood, and I already had some Dickies coveralls that I had rocked with Doom. It turns out that I just really enjoyed being a wolf.” He went on to say, “I think when people put on masks, it kind of brings out a character and gives them a certain boldness that they wouldn’t normally have. People do weird things when they have masks on. I just decided to channel that energy into a whole project.”

For the live debut of Wolf Mask at Extra Chill Fest, Bogan will be joined by Doom Flamingo’s Thomas Kenney on guitar, Persona La Ave’s Dylan Dawkins on Bass, Human Resources’ Dries Vandenberg on guitar and their percussionist Matt Zutell on drums. The lineup will also feature backing vocals from Shannon Vogt and Eliza Novella.

Of the upcoming live show, Bogan told Extra Chill, “I just want the live show to be all about fun, We’ve been going into it with the energy of ‘how can we make this as fun as possible?’. Whether it be through outfits or the crazy musical ideas, or whatever, that’s what we’re all about.”

In addition to the single Bogan shared, he’s working on a full-length LP as Wolf Mask with Coast Records and in collaboration with Human Resources Matt Zutelll and Aaron Utterback. The project will also see vocals from Novella and Vogt.

Bogan plans to release a music video for “LIQUIDCRYSTALDISPLAY” on Thursday, a day before Wolf Mask’s live debut, and roll out singles throughout the year until the full LP releases sometime in early 2023.
