On Saturday night, Gov’t Mule returned to the fabled Fox Theatre in Boulder, Colo., for the first time since February 2005. Last night’s stand was billed as the venue’s 30th-anniversary celebration and saw the Warren Haynes-led ensemble work through a collection of early tunes from their pre-2000 catalog, which included a bust out of “Raven Black Night” and “Towering Fool” during the latter half of the show.

Gov’t Mule’s history at Boulder’s Fox Theatre traces back to their initial performance at the venue in August 1994. Last night’s show saw the band return to the historical stage for the first time in 17 years for a two-set gig that began with a cover of Son House’s “Grinnin’ in Your Face,” before the band followed up with the opening track off their debut album, with the self-titled tune “Mule.”

The group’s initial set persisted with multiple tracks off 1995’s debut LP, on “Temporary Saint,” and a rare rendition of “Dolphineus,” which flowed into “Painted Silver Light” for the group’s first segue pairing of the night. Next, they continued to pull from Gov’t Mule, with selections like “Trane,” “Rocking Horse,” “Monkey Hill,” and a take on “Mother Earth.” Then, they capped the first set with a cover of Grand Funk Railroad’s “Sin’s a Good Man’s Brother.”

Set two saw Haynes, Jorgen Carlsson, Matt Abs and Danny Louis visit 1998’s Dose, with a bust out on the set opening “Raven Black Night” performed for the first time since 2018. Then, the group moved into “Larger Than Life,” which featured a taste of Jimi Hendrix’s “If 6 Was 9,” strategically played on the eve of the 52nd anniversary of the guitarist’s untimely passing, which occurred on Sept. 18, 1970.

Next, the band returned to their Dose catalog on “Game Face” before following up with another bust-out, this time “Towering Fool” performed for the first time since 2014. “No Need to Suffer” landed next, before “Birth of the Mule” and “Blind Man In The Dark.” Finally, for the last song of the night, Gov’t Mule took on “Taste Like Wine” as their only encore.

The ensemble shared their setlist via their official Instagram account and commented, “We had such a blast celebrating 30 years of Govt Mule at the Fox Theater here in downtown Boulder Colorado! See you all in Telluride tomorrow at the iconic Blues and Brews Festival!”
