Recently, Khruangbin and Vieux Farka Touré announced a collaborative album, Ali, due to be released on Sept. 23. As a nod to the forthcoming drop, Vieux Farka Touré and Khruangbin performed together in Prospect Park on Thursday, Aug. 4, for the BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival in Brooklyn, N.Y., joining forces during the encore to unveil a previously unreleased track, “Mahine Me.”

Khruangbin’s set began with “Rules,” before the band kicked into “August Twelve.” Continuing with songs from their 2015 album The Universe Smiles Upon You, the trio – made up of bassist Laura Lee, guitarist Mark Speer and drummer Donald “DJ” Johnson – launched into “Dern Kala.” Khruangbin then followed up with “August 10,” “The Infamous Bill,” and “So We Won’t Forget.” The band performed two songs off of Con Todo El Mundo, “Lady and Man” and “Evan Finds the Third Room” before following with “Pelota.”

Khruangbin then launched into a medley of hip-hop and dance songs that featured tracks by the likes of Grandmaster Flash, Tom Tom Club, Elton John, Ice Cube, Warren G, Spandau Ballet and more. They continued the set with a cover of Kool & The Gang’s “Summer Madness” before closing it out with “Maria También.”

As an encore, Khruangbin brought out Vieux Farka Touré for “Mahine Me” an unreleased track off of their forthcoming collaborative album. Khruangbin then kicked into “Time (You and I)” before closing the night out with an electrifying “People Everywhere (Still Alive).”

Khruangbin will return to New York next month for The Big Climate Thing at Forest Hills Stadium. Tickets to the band’s upcoming shows are available for purchase here.
