Kurt Vile took the stage Wednesday night on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert for a pair of performances, including a cover of John Prine’s “How Lucky.” Vile stopped by to promote his latest album, (watch my moves), which was released on April 15.

Vile started the night off with a live performance of “Mount Airy Hill (Way Gone)” with his backing band, the Violators. The slide guitar-driven track brings the listener back to the heyday of ‘90s indie rock, reminiscent of bands like Built to Spill and Pavement. With lyrics like “I been around but now I’m gone / Been gone but now I’m just way gone,” Vile creates a contemplative and somber atmosphere.

Next, on an off-air web-exclusive performance, the former War on Drugs guitarist recreated a John Prine classic, “How Lucky.” First featured on Prine’s 1979 album Pink Cadillac, Vile recorded a duet of the song with Prine for the former’s 2020 EP, Speed, Sound, Lonely KV. Also featured on the album is a cover of Prine’s “Speed of the Sound of Loneliness.” The duet was the last recording of Prine before his death in April 2020.
