Yesterday, ahead of its 2022 Cannes Film Festival debut, Moonage Daydream shared its debut teaser trailer, featuring never before seen footage of the truly inimitable artist and icon that was David Bowie.

The film, directed by Brett Morgen, comes more than six years after Bowie’s death and explores Bowie’s ability to transform, adapt, overcome and entertain groundbreaking ideas. Following Bowie’s passing, his estate granted Morgen access to over 5 million assets, including rare and never-before-seen drawings, films, journals and recordings. From this, Morgen set out to create a film that allowed fans not to learn about Bowie but instead experience him.

“Who is he, what is he, where did he come from?” Dick Cavett says in an archival clip introducing Bowie as a guest on his talk show in the 1970s in the film’s trailer. “Is he dangerous, smart, dumb… crazy, sane, man, woman, robot, what is this?”

Following yesterday’s screening of the film, critics called Moonage Daydream a revelation, saying that the unique unabashed look at Bowie’s legacy reinforces what many felt: That Bowie was ahead of our time and his time and that “Bowie seems to have genuinely loved life.”

Moonage Daydream will be released in theaters by Neon this September. HBO and HBO Max will stream the documentary in 2023.
