As part of their Gigaton Tour, Pearl Jam stopped by The Kia Forum in Inglewood, Calif. this weekend. During their show on Saturday night, the ensemble honored the late Taylor Hawkins with a cover of the Foo Fighters’ “Cold Day in the Sun.”
The original version of the song featured Hawkins on lead vocals, and true to form, during Pearl Jam’s rendition of the track drummer and friend and collaboration of Hawkins on their Nighttime Boogie Association side project, Matt Cameron took to the mic for the 2005 song.
Before the cover, Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder said of Hawkins’ death, “It’s never easy when you lose someone. As you get older, you’ll notice it starts happening more and more. It’s just where you are on the timeline and where your friends are on the timeline. But sometimes, like this, it’s so unexpected. But also makes it harder because he was someone who truly, truly loved living life on this planet. So I guess the one thing we can be consoled by is the fact that he never wasted a moment, and he did live his life to the fullest. We just want more of it.”
The performance also featured another friend of Hawkins, the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Chad Smith on percussion along with Mark Guiliana on drums. Recently at Jazz Fest, the Red Hot Chili Peppers–who subbed in for Foo Fighters–paid tribute to Hawkins, with a bass drum with Hawkins hawk tattoo and “Taylor” written within the image.
During their tour opening performance earlier this week, Vedder acknowledged the bond between Cameron and Hawkins. Following Hawkins’ death on March 25, Cameron wrote on Instagram, “I love Taylor Hawkins. He brought so much joy and happiness to my life. I can’t believe he’s gone. I miss him already damn. My deepest love and condolences to the entire Foo Fighters organization and to the beautiful Hawkins family.”
