On Saturday, John Mayer finished a two-night run at Atlanta’s State Farm Arena, as part of his ongoing Sob Rock Tour which kicked off in February. The Dead & Company guitarist embellished his tune “If I Ever Get Around to Living” with a taste of 1973’s “Here Comes Sunshine” during the latter half of the gig.

In what has become customary for Mayer’s current live shows, the first of three sets featured the full band performing new tracks off 2021’s Sob Rock; including “Last Train Home,” Shot in the Dark,” and “I Guess I Just Feel Like” paired with fan favorites like Continuum’s “I Don’t Trust Myself (With Loving You)” and The Search For Everything’s “Still Feel Like Your Man.”

An acoustic set came next, beginning with “Walt Grace’s Submarine Test, January 1967,” which featured backing vocalists Tiffany Palmer and Carlos Ricketts Jr, and continued with “In Your Atmosphere” with a “Wherever I Go” outro. For the last song of the set, Mayer covered Tom Petty’s “Free Fallin’” with assistance from guest guitarist David Ryan Harris.

For their next set, the band began with Room for Square‘s “Your Body Is a Wonderland,” followed by “Rosie” and “Wild Blue.” Then, Mayer and the band broke into “If I Ever Get Around to Living” off 2012’s Born and Raised. The latter included Mayer riffing into Grateful Dead’s 1973 favorite, “Here Comes Sunshine.” In an ode to the summer ahead, Mayer’s playful tease excited fans with the reminder of his forthcoming tour.

Then, they continued with a cover of Prince’s “The Beautiful Ones,” with Harris adding a few lyrics, followed by “Slow Dancing in a Burning Room.” For the final song of the set, the band played “Gravity.” Then, after a brief break, they returned to the stage for an encore performance of Sob Rock’s “Shouldn’t Matter but It Does” and “New Light.”

The Sob Rock Tour continues tonight at Spectrum Center in Charlotte, N.C. For fans of Dead & Company, tickets for their Summer 2022 Tour are on sale now and can be purchased here
