Dopapod have announced their seventh studio album–which will serve as their self-titled LP– will release on May 27. Along with the announcement, the quartet released the third single from the project “Black Holes” alongside an accompanying music video.

The video is cut up into four smaller squares each separated by black lines–within each box is a member of Dopapod. As the song progresses animated lines and artwork dance over the independent squares, renderings of space and geometric artwork flashes over them uniting the overall image. Before long, the four cameras capture the four musicians playing together in the same room from different perspectives highlighting a sense of sonic unity. They sing on the track, “All for one, and one for all / you’ll never fly ’til you learn to fall.”

“It’s a song about not giving up and thinking creatively to achieve the desired outcome,” keyboardist Eli Winderman said in a statement. “All for one and one for all is another concept that we try to tap into with improvising as well. The main focus is on the group to achieve moments of unity.”

Dopapod will mark the band’s first studio release since 2019’s Emit Time, which was released after they took a hiatus in 2018. In 2019, they came back with a sold-out comeback show at The Capitol Theatre in April but their return to steady touring was stopped by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The hiatus allowed us to redefine ourselves, and carry on with a lot of new energy. It was a restorative opportunity and helped us move forward,” drummer Neal “Fro” Evans added. “We definitely came back with new energy and new intention.”

Additionally, Dopapod has started rolling out an animated short film titled Building A Time Machine along with a roleplaying game designed by longtime team member and former lighting designer Luke Stratton which will be included on the self-titled albums vinyl jacket.
