Last night, Phish performed the second evening of their Riviera Maya destination event at the Moon Palace in Cancún, Mexico. The night included the band’s debut cover of The Rolling Stones’ “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” during their first set. The second half of the evening featured a rare four-song set that included a 25-minute plus “Down with Disease.”
Phish kicked off the show with “Say It To Me S.A.N.T.O.S.” which was followed by “Ghost” > “Free.” Next came the bluesy “Back On The Train” of 2000s Farmhouse. Trey Anastasio lead the band into the rhythmic “Halley’s Comet” showcasing Page McConnell’s sweeping synths, which led to a short return of “Say It To Me S.A.N.T.O.S.” Next came, Phish’s debut cover of The Rolling Stones’ beloved song “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction.” Though the rendition only featured the first verse and chorus of the song fans were elated about the historic debut. Phish then seamlessly transitioned into “Also Sprach Zarathustra” also known as “2001” which lead into “Chalk Dust Torture” to close the set.
The second set started with “Down With Disease,” Anastasio adlibbed “dancing on the beach” and “dancing on the sand” into the opening lyrics. The track went on for over 20-minutes and featured peaks, valleys, grooves, tension and resolution. The jam continued as they moved into “Backwards Down the Number Line” which led into the carnal chords of “Carini.” Next, Phish played the final song of their four-track set, “A Song I Heard The Ocean Sing” which after “Carini” served as an uplifting and cooling closer.
Phish encored with a nod to their beautiful surroundings, “Wading In A Velvet Sea.” They closed the evening with the high energy “Run Like An Antelope,” to lead fans and guests into the weekend.
Phish: Riviera Maya continues tonight at 7:30 p.m. EST. A livestream is available at LivePhish.com and SiriusXM airing the show on Phish Radio.
