Rochester, N.Y.-based singer/songwriter Katie Morey has shared the latest single off her upcoming LP Friend of a Friend, due to release digitally and on vinyl on April 9. The single titled “Trial by Fire” is the second track Morey has shared off the album following “Curlique Telephone Wire.”

“Trial by Fire” showcases the singer’s crystalline vocals, thoughtful lyricism and sonic arrangements. Morey takes her time on the track allowing her euphonious and mellow harmonies to softly carve a place listeners to settle into before ambling into an intense instrumental section.

“I wrote ‘Trial By Fire’ to help me cope with the terror I’m feeling inside about climate change,” Morey said in a statement. “The verses sort of resemble the inner calm brought on by numbness and the middle section represents the overarching chaos that comes from feeling complicit and at the same time that it’s out of our control. “

She’s joined on the track by Ben Morey on guitar, Joe Parker on drums, and Mikaela Davis and Cammy Enaharo on backup vocals. “Trial by Fire” comes to a close with echoing questions to the self, asking, “How do I make it right with two wrongs on either side/ How do we come to this place and who and what do we hide behind/ Trial by fire.”

Morey is known for her work with Paul’s Grandfather and Pleistocene, which have shared bills with artists including Cursive, Japanese Breakfast, and Screaming Females.
