Oakland-based singer-songwriter (and longtime host of the Grateful Dead Hour) David Gans has livestreamed nearly 450 performances since the start of the pandemic, rarely missing a day, and he’s still going strong.
Gans’ daily livestreams run on Facebook at 4 p.m. and have served as a refuge for many who felt musically starved during lockdowns. Although the world is reopening and in-person performances are filling up, Gans’ streak is only picking up speed. The artist said the shows have become one of the most rewarding aspects of his 50-year career.
“My last live gig was March 6, 2020. I started looking for times to do a live show and realized that if I waited til nothing else was happening, I would never play. So I just started playing every day, and whaddya know? A nice bunch of regulars has sprung up, many of whom are there EVERY DAY,” Gans shared.
Gans’ livestreams showcase his original works like “Summer By the Bay” and “Your Movie,” along with skillful covers of iconic songs like the Grateful Dead’s “Wharf Rat” and The Band’s seminal song “The Weight.”
“I made Pollstar’s steaming charts (since discontinued) several times last year, and the donations and book/CD sales have been sufficient to make it finically worthwhile,” Gans continued to share. “Spiritually, nothing’s better!”
