Benjamin Gibbard has announced a new album celebrating the work of artist, activist, singer and songwriter Yoko Ono. The LP is titled Ocean Child: Songs of Yoko Ono and is set to release on Friday, Feb. 1, 2022.

The Death Cab for Cutie frontman imagined and curated 14 all-new versions of Ono tracks performed by a wide range of artists and stars, including David Byrne and Yo La Tengo. Byrne and Yo La Tengo come together on a cover of “Who Has Seen The Wind?” on the LP, which was released in conjunction with the album announcement.

Ocean Child: Songs of Yoko Ono also features performances from Sharon Van Etten, Death Cab for Cutie, US Girls, Japanese Breakfast, Jay Som, Stephin Merritt (Magnetic Fields), Thao, Sudan Archives, We Are KING, and Amber Coffman, all of whom strive to honor Ono’s artistic impact, unique approach to music and cultural relevance.

Of her impact, Gibbard said, “Yoko makes art that teaches all of us that peace is possible [Ocean Child: Songs of Yoko Ono] was born out of both love and frustration,” Gibbard continued in the press release. “The ‘love’ part is pretty obvious; It is the seemingly bottomless well of inspiration and enjoyment Yoko Ono’s music has provided me, and I must assume everyone else present here on this compilation.”

A portion of the album’s profits will be donated to the non-profit WhyHunger. Ono has supported WhyHunger for decades in its efforts to transform our food system by building social justice and striking at the root causes of hunger and poverty.
