Gov’t Mule’s Aug. 30 stop in Minnesota had fans hooting and hollering as the Warren Haynes-led outfit not only covered The Rolling Stones in honor of Charlie Watts, but dusted off ZZ Top’s “I’m Bad, I’m Nationwide” for the first time since 2003 in honor of the late Dusty Hill.
The show kicked off with Gov’t Mule original “Stone Cold Rage,” but things really started to heat up midway through set one with a nice “Game Face”> “Mountain Jam”> “Game Face” segment.
Set two, however, was marked by its covers, with an opening take on Steve Miller Band’s “The Joker.”
The aforementioned Stones cover arrived later with “Angie,” followed by the first version of ZZ Top’s “I’m Bad, I’m Nationwide” since Mule’s 12/31/03 stop at the Beacon Theatre. (The show gap for that tune is an astonishing 1,285.)
Haynes and company kept the momentum going with “Mule”> “I’ve Been Working”> “Superstition”> “Mule,” and ended the set with the frontman’s signature “Soulshine.”
The band encored with “Look On Yonder Wall.”
